Apart from the usual Greek holiday travel guides there are any number of useful and interesting books on Greece and the Greek islands that would appeal to any lover of Hellenic matters. These articles suggest books we have come across even even remotely connected to the Greek islands - from Greek animals to Greek archaeology, from Greek cooking to Greek clocks. We may even include books that we think you might like to take on a Greek isand holiday.

One of the best travel writers on Greece and the Greek Islands, Patrick Leigh Fermor, has died aged 96. His accounts of travels across Europe, Greece and the Caribbean are widely regarded as classics of travel literature. In World War Two he lived, disguised as a shepherd, in the mountains of Crete. He helped organise the resistance movement and he was one of those who led the team that, in 1944, kidnapped General Heinrich Kreipe.

As a regular rambler I always look forward to taking a well-earned a holiday in the Greek Islands when I can roam the hills and take myself off on some of the splendid walking trails. Of all the Greek islands Crete is my favourite for walking and now I've come across a web site that offers some excellent Crete walking guides. Discover Crete On Foot has a small but remarkably useful selection

Just got my hands on a few of Nigel McGilchrist's guides to the Greek islands. What a joy to read. At £150 I couldn't afford the whole set of 20 books but I got a few of the more interesting at knock-down prices of around £6 each. Art historian Nigel McGilchrist lives in an Italian farmhouse, keeps donkeys and makes his own olive oil and wine.
