Visitors to the Crete island holiday resort of Stavros on the Akrotiri peninsula soon learn of its strong links with the hit Greek movie of 'Zorba the Greek'. Much of the movie was filmed on Akrotiri, Crete, both on the holiday beaches and in the village of Stavros - now a noted Crete island holiday resort. The house in Stavros, Crete, that featured so strongly the award-winning 1964 film, is to be turned into a cultural centre.

If beach lovers on a beach holiday in Crete fancy a change of scenery they should take a stroll around the Botanical Park near the village of Skourdalou on the north coast. The 20 hectare park lies just off the national road, about 20km from Chania, and is full of fruit trees, herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants. The Crete Botanical Park grew from the ashes of a wildfire in 2003 which destroyed 60,000 olive trees.

Holiday visitors to Crete island will find sardines on the menu when the 17th Sardine Festival gets under way in Chania this week
Grilled sardines are served up for free on the beach of Nea Chora on Monday, September 5 along with Cretan wine to kick off the popular holiday event. The 'Feast of Sardines' is as popular with Chania holiday visitors as it is with locals and has now become a social institution.

A theatre on the Greek holiday island of Crete is to pay tribute to the Greek actress Melina Mercouri with a photo exhibition. Visitors on holiday in Crete can visit the free exhibition staged at the Municipal Theatre of Crete in Hania during the last two weeks in August. Melini Mercouri is one of the best known Greek actors among UK audiences for her movie performances in Never On Sunday.

An amateur Crete gardener claims to have a tree that can grow five kinds of fruit on the same plant. Civil engineer Manolis Iliakis says the tree produces tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, wild amaranth as well as potatoes in his garden near Rethymnon, Crete. He said the tree was not a mutation or a freak of nature as he has spent years cultivating the plant. The remarkable result of his horticultural efforts is the result of grafting compatible varieties together to produce different fruits.

Holidaymakers out walking in Crete have been warned to take proper precautions against getting lost on remote island paths. The call comes after two missing tourists were found safe and well in a remote area of Crete after police were called over fears for their safety. Two French tourists, a 55-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, were walking in the remote area west of Chania, near the beaches of Falasarna and Balos in western Crete when they went missing.

Four British tourists have been arrested in Crete for passing fake €50 notes, while two more men have been charged with indecent exposure. Four men, all aged about 21, were found using counterfeit notes while on holiday in the popular holiday resort of Malia. They were caught by Heraklion police with a total of nine fake €50 notes in their possession. The counterfeit notes were seized by police.Also on Crete, two male holidaymakers were arrested in Hersonissos, after exposing themselves to passers-by.

Visitors to western Crete often head into the mountains that form a majestic backdrop to resorts along coasts, both north and south. People passing through the mountain plain of Askinou may stumble upon an amazing private war museum hidden in the hills.
