Visitors to the 2012 Olympic Games get a taste of Greek islands holidays as a replica of and ancient Greek warship goes on display in London. The trireme 'Olympias' is a reconstruction of an ancient warship that was used to help the ancient Greeks defeat the Persians in Salamis around 2,500 years ago. The full-scale, working replica of the legendary 170-oared Athenian trireme is to go on display in London during the 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

Holiday visitors to Greece this year will get a chance to see what is thought to be the world's first 'computer', which dates from about 100BC. An exhibition called 'The wreck of Antikythera - The ship, the treasures, the Mechanism', opens at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens on April 5 and will run for a year The Antikythera Mechanism is believed to be an ancient mechanical computer designed to calculate astronomical positions.

Holiday visitors to Greece and the Greek islands have pushed up visitor numbers to Greek museums and archaeological sites. Latest figures report a 17% rise in numbers of Greece holiday visitors to monuments and museums across the country with receipts from sales up around 5%. The boost in numbers comes despite months of street protests in Greece mainland cities, strikes that have affected flights and ferry services and walkouts that have temporarily closed many museums and historic sites.

Germans may be top of the list in numbers taking Greek island holidays but the German weekly magazine Focus has ended up in in a Greek court for one of its cover stories. A satirical cover depicts the ancient Greek goddess Venus raising her finger to Europe while an article accuses recession-hit Greece of ignoring other European states. The German magazine's publisher and 12 journalists have been charged with defamation and insulting a Greek national symbol.

Gazing out over the aquamarine sea is a favourite occupation of those on a Greek island holiday. Now underwater archaeologists have given them a fascinating glimpse of former Greek glories that lie beneath the waves. Using cutting edge computers, scientists have digitally reconstructed a 'lost' Bronze Age city port that was swallowed up by the waves about 3,000 years ago. The lost city of 'Pavlopetri' has been fully mapped and recreated.
