Greek holidays cheapest in Europe.
Hotels in Greece and the Greek Islands now provide the cheapest holidays destinations in southern Europe, according to latest research. A survey of hotel prices across Europe by hotel meta-search engine Trivago finds Greece currently the cheapest holiday destination in southern Europe and the fourth cheapest for hotel room rates in Europe as a whole.
The company compares prices from over 600,000 hotels on more than 140 accommodation booking sites and compared hotel prices in 50 cities and 24 countries to find the cheapest holiday destinations.
Hotel prices in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary were the cheapest on offer with Greece and the Greek Islands in fourth place. At the same time, Greece was found to be the cheapest destination in southern Europe for June 2013 and also showed the biggest drop in average hotel prices.
The average online hotel price per night for a double-bed room in Europe has dropped by 8% this year to stand at €93 compared to €100 for the same month last year.
The average holiday hotel price in Spain and Portugal is €102 euros while in Cyprus it stands at €113. Hotels in Greece are now cheaper than big holiday rival Turkey where the price stands at €137.
According to the website Tripadvisor, hotel prices in Greece are dropping by as much as 20% this year. Its survey of nine popular Greek Island destinations shows that all but two have seen hotel rates drop significantly since last year.
The biggest fall in hotel price rates has been Corfu, where holiday hotel prices have dropped on average by 20%. Only in the islands of Mykonos and Santorini have room rates remained constant.
